Beliefs About Coaching

Part of being your Instructional Guide and Coach is being your partner in thinking, collaborating, planning, and teaching. It can be helpful to know a little about the person you are partnering with. Here are my core beliefs and practices related to coaching. My Core Beliefs: I will stay focused on student learning. I will assume positive intentions at all times. Everyone cares deeply for their students and is doing the best job they can. I am a teaching and thinking partner, not an expert who has all the answers. Teachers drive the work of coaching cycles. I do not have a hidden agenda. Maintaining trust and confidentiality is critical. My Practices: I will work with teachers to set goals based on formative assessment. I will work with teachers to create learning targets centered around our goal. I will co-plan with teachers. I will co-teach with teachers. I will micro model lessons. I will co-confer and think aloud with teachers.

The "Moves"

You may be wondering, "What we will be doing together when we engage in a coaching cycle?" I hope this post will help bring this wonder to light. These "moves" come from Diane Sweeney and Leanna S. Harris' book Student Centered Coaching-The Moves. The Schedule: YOU will guide the formation of our schedule together based on what works for you. In general, we will meet about once a week to co-plan . We will then be in your classroom TOGETHER co-teaching . We will work in a coaching cycle for about 6 weeks. Check out this short video on co-planning and co-teaching create by Diane Sweeney. "What will co-teaching in my classroom look like?" Sweeney and Harris describe 6 key "moves" that we can engage it. What is Coaching the Student-Centered Way?

Welcome to the 2017/2018 school year! I am so excited to start working together through Student-Centered Coaching at Clayton. My main purpose as an instructional guide is to assist teachers to reach their goals for student learning. So, what exactly does that look like? We will be using the Student-Centered Coaching model from Diane Sweeney's book Student Centered Coaching and Student-Centered Coaching- The Moves by Diane Sweeney and Leanna S. Harris. Working together to achieve student growth is the goal! Coaching will be organized in cycles that align with I/E Rounds and will last approximately 6 weeks. We will work together to look at student work, co-plan lessons, and co-teach. You will choose the focus based on what you feel will benefit your students most.
